The directed evolution technique, an effective method to improve the catalytic activity of enzymes and the basic principle such as error-prone PCR and DNA shuffling as well as some derivative techniques are reviewed. In addition, several successful examples in the synthesis of chiral organic compounds using directed evolution technique are also described.
