Crystallographic Features of Quasicrystals

Guo Kexin

1994, 6 (04): 266- |
Published: 01 December 1994
Abstract

The sensational discovery of quasicrystals with fivefold rotational symmetry and no periodic translation order ten years ago made a strong impact to all solid state sciences based on crystals and crystallography, comprising metallurgy, materials science, chemistry, physics, mineralogy, etc. After a decennium of intensive study, many important aspects of this new class of materials and a new kind of ordered state with the so-called "forbidden" symmetry and quasiperiodicity have been made clear. Time is perhaps ripen to review the main advances of quasicrystal research made in the past ten years. The topics discussed in the present review arc:(1)quasicrystal or five-fold twins? (2)why fivefold symmetry? (3)why quasiperiodicity?(9 ) stable quasicrystals;(5)crystalline approximants.

DNA-Binding Proteins in Gene Regulation

Zhang Ruoheng, Xu Xiaojie, Tang Youqi

1994, 6 (04): 280- |
Published: 01 December 1994
Abstract

Genes are regulated by the DNA-binding proteins which bind to the specific sites of the DNA. Based on the crystallographic and molecular biology study, the DNA-protein interactions are elucidated. DNA-binding motifs such as "helix-turn-helix", "zinc-finger" and "leucine-zipper" are discussed.

Abstract

At the turn of the centuries.organic chemistry will be faced with more and more challenges from li:e sciences, environmental sciences and materials science. This article reviews the foundation and development of a new field in organic chemistry—the design, synthesis and assembly of organic molecules based on molecular recognition and points cut that this field will become an important direction for the development of organic chemistry in new era. The development and application of the concept of molecular recognition will not only make organic chemistry well meet its new challenges but also stimulate the development of organic synthetic chemistry itself.

Abstract

The advances and state of the arts of the molecular fluorescent signal devices are introduced concisely. Some basic problems in this field are discussed. The paper indicates that this scientific field is an important and completely new field concerned with different disciplines and is worthy of note.
