This study uses the global and Chinese patent databases of strategic emerging industries to analyze the performances of patents of strategic emerging industries. Contents include the statistical analysis of global and Chinese patent application performances between 2012 and 2016, Chinese patent registration, and Chinese patents in force between 2015 and 2016 from the perspectives of the whole dimension, industries, regions, and innovative entities. We summarize the innovative development features of strategic emerging industries, and provide the corresponding suggestions.

Based on the data about “Integrate Optics” in the Science Citation Index Expanded database during 2010-2017, the research status of integrated optics was analyzed and explored by using Incites, Thomson Data Analyzer and Excel. The results show that research of integrated optics keeps stable,and China and USA are the leading countries which published the largest number of papers in the world. The Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) published the largest number of papers in all of institutions around the world. UK and the CNRS are the country and institute whose Category Normalized Citation Impact (CNCI) are of the highest. The USA has the higheit amount of highly cited papers in the field. The integrated optical devices are hotspot among the research areas.

Southeast Asia is one region that has invested heavily in AI and as a result boasts huge growth in its AI capabilities and understanding. By recognizing AI’s capacity to influence both business and social settings, the region has published a diverse range of AI-related research papers and patents in recent years. Subject matters include not just computer algorithms, but also semiconductors, robotics, medicine, and biochemistry, thus highlighting the versatility of AI and its potential applications to impact everyday lives.

The new year has seen major setbacks for the already challenging field of Alzheimer’s disease (AD), with confirmation of three significant drug development failures plus a major pharma company exiting the area entirely. AD is the sixth leading cause of death in the U.S., and the only one of the top 10 that cannot be prevented or treated. Effective drug treatment is desperately needed, but remains elusive. The failure rate for potential AD drugs, including ones that have reached the final stages of development, is notoriously high: No new drugs have entered the market since Namenda in 2004, and the failure rate in clinical trials is almost 100%.
