The Paper introduces the brief history of the development of eucommza ulmoides gum (EU gum) and the progress on basic research and applied development of this material. It is pointed out that the birth of the high elastic Eu gum， the discovery of the three stages of vulcanizing process and the three kinds of different materials, which correspond to the three stages, the building of the systematic material engineering and the development of the concept on "Unitary Material-Spectrum composed of rubbers and plastics"have brought the study on EU gum into a new stage，and moreover，promoted the development of a series of new functional materials. Finally，the prospects of the comprehensive utilization of eucommia ulmaides resources are discussed.
