    Based on the records in Clarivate Analytics's Web of Science database, this paper uses bibliometric method to assess the development trends of astronomy in China and the world during 2005 to 2014. The paper analyzes the aspects of the research production, academic impact, disciplinary status,highly cited papers, international collaboration and disciplinary layout. The paper aims to compare the strength of China with the developed countries, reveal the development trend of China's astronomy and its international competitiveness, and provide references to astronomy policy formulation for Chinese government.

    Studying the S&T development trend and landscape in the Group 20, finding the China’s position in the Group 20 and challenges it faces, providing valuable information for enhancing the S&T competitiveness of China. The scientific and technological performances of the Group 20 are analyzed by selecting Web of Science Core Collection and Derwent Innovation as data sources, adopting bibliometrics method, patent analysis, citation analysis and visualization method. G7 is prominent in scientific and technological performances, and its output scale of research papers, patent applications and academic influence is in the leading position in the G20. Australia, South Korea and the BRICS, such as China, India and Brazil, all showed rapid growth status. China is developing rapidly in S&T, which its output scale of research papers and academic influence has jumped to second place in the G20, and the patent application ranks first in the G20.
