Based on the WoS database provided by Clarivate Analytics, the study evaluated the overall research performance of Chinese science from two dimensions, research scale and efficiency. The statistics results showed that: For China, the expansion of research scale continues in 2016, and China has maintained its second position in terms of research scale. Moreover, China’s citations and the number of high quality output increased compared to the data of 2015. However, with respect to research efficiency, there exists a noticeable gap between China and developed countries. China should focus more on the improvement of the research efficiency.

Computational science and engineering solves complex science and engineering problems by using advanced computational power, and it is a link and tool for computer application in high-tech fields. Since the 21st century, the petaflop computing and exascale computing will significantly enhance the scientific and technological innovation ability of all countries in the fields of national security, aerospace, life sciences, materials science, climate and ecological environment, resulting in a major science theory and application breakthroughs. In this paper, articles of science and engineering computing from 2007 to 2016 in the Web of Science TM core collection database of Clarivate Analytics are used as data sources. Thomson Data Analyzer is used to quantitatively analyze the research trends of science and engineering computing. The analysis results revealed the overall international competition situations of science and engineering computing by exploring the annual development trends, mainstream research countries, important research institutes and hotspots research areas.

  • Amid the many challenges facing Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), there are signs of progress, as well. The RB Group, in India, noting the growth potential of SSA’s pharmaceutical markets, has set up a $12 million pharmaceuticals production plant for drugs against HIV and tuberculosis across the wider southern African region. We are seeing the governments of South Africa and Nigeria using their procurement budgets to help local manufacturers. Currently only 30% to 35% of medicines sold in Nigeria are produced locally, and agreements with the federal government are underway to boost local drug production to 70%.
