Thomson Data Analyzer and UCINET were used to perform data mining and quantitive analysis of iron ore research papers between 2008 and 2012 from SCIE database. The result indicates that global iron ore research papers are at an average growth rate of 8% in the past five years; disciplines involved can be divided into two groups, one is exploration and development, another is environmental protection; the research priorities are spectral characteristics of magnetite and environmental problems caused by pyrite development; papers from China and Chinese Academy of Sciences rank first in all countries and international institutions separately, but there is still a gap between China and developed countries such as United States and some countries in Europe in terms of research impact; meanwhile, its international cooperative research capacity needs to be improved.
