Limitations of expanding h-index on the evaluation of individuals’ performance were analyzed,
involving in its less sensitivity, less differentiability and less undulation. Thus, R-index was put forward for
compensating for the first two limits and AR-index, derived from R-index, for the last one. Firstly, h-index,
R-index and AR-index were calculated on data of 17 Price Prize winners. Then, two indices compounds -
normalization (h,R) index and equivalent (h,R) were designed to avoid the effect of two factors involved and
each index was measured by coupled with the others. It showed that there were significant correlations of hindex
    with R-index, h-index with AR-index and R-index with AR-index. Therefore, both R-index and ARindex
are good complementary indicators to h-index with function expanded.

The h-index proposed by Hirsch J E is considered as a new indicator to evaluate researcher’s
scientific output, and can be used to evaluate the impact of universities as well. The method for determination
of the h-index of universities was explained by a sample and the h-indices of fifty Chinese keystone
universities were calculated. The correlations of the h-index with other indicators are discussed.

This paper uses Hirsch index (h-index for short) which is put forward by Hirsch Jorge E, to
research and analyze information scientists’frequency of citation ranked at top 50 in China by CSSCI over
the period 1998-2005. We calculate h-indices of researchers to evaluate their achievements, examine and
compare the relationship between h-index and traditional quantitative indices.
